DETAILED ITINERARY

After your morning breakfast, it’s off to the airport where your flight to Cusco City awaits. Your Peru vacation is officially underway. Upon arrival in Cusco, a GOTOPERU representative will greet you and escort you to your hotel. From there, you’ll be able to relax and enjoy the rest of the evening as you please. Cusco City offers a lively nightlife and a variety of restaurants to fit any budget and palate.
.

Breakfast at your hotel, followed by a morning of leisure. Then in the early afternoon, it’ll be time for your first Cusco tour, when you’ll get to visit some of the amazing archaeological sites in and around the Andean city. Make sure to bring your camera, as this Peru travel tour promises beautiful photo opportunities, like the Cathedral of Santo Domingo, the ruins of Q’enko, the Inca baths at Tambomachay, and the walls of Sacsayhuaman and Puka Pukara.

The tour will last into the late afternoon. After returning to your hotel, you’ll have time to relax  before dinner at one of Cusco’s many restaurants. Note that in the evenings, the temperature will drop a bit, so be sure to take a sweater or light jacket. And if you find yourself without one, you can always purchase one. Around the city there are various markets and high-end stores selling alpaca wool sweaters, just right for cooler weather.

As with Day One, spend the rest of your evening as you please, enjoying the hospitality of Cusco locals and their culture.
.

After an early breakfast you’ll embark on a journey into the famous Sacred Valley of the Incas, also known as the Urubamba Valley. As you wind through the Andean mountaintops, you’ll find echoes of a traditional lifestyle that has existed there for more than 500 years: traditional clothing, clay fire ovens, and many of the irrigation techniques developed more than half a millennium ago.

The drive to the Sacred Valley isn’t very long, but it will give you a chance to see typical Andean villages and scenery. Remember your camera. Once you descend into the Sacred Valley, you’ll know why the Incas revered this land. Its lush fertile soil, the inspiration for the Incas’ advanced agricultural methods, is still ever-present.

The tour will include a visit to the town of Pisac, famous for its local market. Here you can purchase any number of Andean garments and handicrafts to remember your Peru vacation. The town also offers interesting architectural elements, such as terraces, tunnels, and temples to explore. It’s obvious why Pisac is such a gem of the Sacred Valley of the Incas.

Next, it’ll be time to visit the magnificent ruins of Ollantaytambo, which offers amazing lookouts over the valley. Built in the mid-15th century, the structure was originally a residence: the royal estate of Emperor Pachacuti. During the Spanish conquest of Peru however, Ollantaytambo transformed into a fortress, as Manco Inca Yupanqui and the Inca resistance made a final stand against the invading Spanish conquistadores.

By late afternoon and after wandering the ruins of Pisac and Ollantaytambo for most of the day, it’ll be time to head back to Cusco. The rest of the evening can be spent at leisure, either at the hotel or on the town. Be sure to get some rest though, as Day Four promises to be even busier.
.

After breakfast at your Cusco hotel, it’ll be time to take a train ride to the hidden temple of the Incas: Machu Picchu. Consider the train ride in and of itself an attraction, as it winds its path along the river and mountain face, offering dramatic views of the Andes. Pay close attention to the foliage as it’ll exemplify Peru’s diverse geography. Watch as the train approaches the Amazon rainforest, the foliage will dramatically change, revealing an abrupt contrast to what was just seen in the Andes.

Your train will stop in the town of Aguas Calientes, located some 20 minutes from Machu Picchu. Upon your arrival, a GOTOPERU representative will escort you to the bus station, where you’ll catch your ride up to the secluded citadel.

Once there, an expert English-speaking guide will greet you and take you on a two-hour tour of Machu Picchu’s most important sites, including its three primary structures: Intihuatana (Sun Stone), the Temple of the Sun, and the Room of the Three Windows. Indeed, the intricate stonework of this amazing site is truly something to behold. To think that these giant stones were hauled to the mountain by hand, centuries ago, and yet their foundations remain standing today.

After these Machu Picchu tours, you’ll have the opportunity to continue exploring the site on your own and to take some final photos. In the late afternoon, you’ll take the train back to Cusco where you’ll be able to relax  for the evening.

Note: This package can be customized to include an extra night in Aguas Calientes, the nearby town located on the Urubamba River and at the foot of Machu Picchu.
.

After a delectable breakfast at your Cusco hotel, you could have a free morning depending of your flight time.
